What Is Mis-Sold Motor Finance?

Mis-sold motor finance occurs when lenders pay a commission to brokers without your knowledge or consent. These hidden commissions can significantly increase the cost of your finance agreement, leaving you out of pocket. But don't worry — you're not alone. The FCA has confirmed that 12.1 million car finance agreements are eligible for compensation under its redress scheme.

Frequently asked questions

What is a car finance claim?
A car finance claim is a way to seek compensation if your car finance agreement was mis-sold. In many cases, drivers paid more than they should have because dealers or brokers received undisclosed commission. If the commission wasn't properly explained to you, you could be owed compensation. Successful claims may result in compensation of £829* per vehicle. Average payout figure. Not all consumers will be eligible for compensation. See the FCA statement at https://www.fca.org.uk/news/statements/fca-confirms-motor-finance-redress-scheme.
What's the average payout?
According to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the expected average payout per eligible car finance agreement under its motor finance compensation scheme is around £829*. This figure is an estimate based on modelling of the number of agreements that could qualify and possible participation, and it includes simple interest under the FCA's methodology. However, actual payouts could be higher or lower depending on individual circumstances, such as the details of your loan and the final rules of the scheme once they are published. There is no guarantee that a representative will recover any more than you may achieve if you pursued the claim on your own. Not all consumers will be eligible for compensation.
Can I claim for more than one vehicle?
Yes. If you've financed multiple vehicles, you may be able to claim for each agreement that was mis-sold. Each agreement is assessed separately, and any compensation awarded will depend on the specifics of that agreement.
Is my agreement eligible?
The FCA is seeking to introduce a Consumer Redress Scheme that explains the circumstances when a motor finance agreement might be eligible for compensation within the scope of the Scheme.
Can I submit a claim myself without using a firm?
You can also pursue a claim yourself, free of charge, either directly with your finance company or through the Financial Ombudsman Service or the FCA's redress scheme. Please refer to the FCA's redress scheme at https://www.fca.org.uk/news/statements/fca-confirms-motor-finance-redress-scheme.
Which lenders can I claim against?
Claims can potentially be made against a wide range of UK lenders, including many well-known finance providers, brokers, and dealerships.
How long will my claim take?
The FCA are seeking to introduce a compensation scheme for some customers who took out car finance between 6 April 2007 and 1 November 2024 and were not properly informed about commission arrangements. However, the scheme has been legally challenged. On 2 July 2026, the FCA confirmed that parts of the scheme had been suspended while the Upper Tribunal considers those challenges. This means compensation decisions and payments may be delayed. You can still make a complaint now and the FCA hopes that payments will be received in 2027.
Why start your claim as soon as possible?
Starting your PCP claim now means your complaint is registered with the lender. You do not need to wait for the lender to contact you, and you can usually begin with basic details even if you no longer have your finance paperwork. However, the FCA scheme has been partially suspended following legal challenges. Submitting early does not currently mean you will receive an earlier compensation decision or payment, as lenders are not required to calculate or pay compensation until the legal process concludes.
